As you delight in the colorful display of fireworks this Independence Day, I urge you to think. Think about how America came into independence, acknowledge the heroic spirit of the men who got us there, and try to understand the philosophical significance of the event.
On this day in 1776, our Founding Fathers took a great risk and declared political independence from the most powerful nation on earth- Great Britain. They put into effect the philosophical principles that catalyzed the great American philosophy- the idea that governments do not rule, but are ruled by those it serves, the idea that human beings are born with fundamental rights, and most importantly, the idea that life should be lived with principle.
The signing of the Declaration of Independence exemplified human bravery, and demonstrated the value of ideas; the Founding Fathers created a revolution with thought, not force. And that is something to celebrate.
So, I urge you to take some time and ponder the significance of our history, but also to celebrate! Celebrate like America once did when they felt the pride of their immenseaccomplishments, and the freedom they deserve.
